Want to travel abroad this summer...for FREE?
Alex Liu, '12 BME & CS, has won
the internationally prestigious and highly
selective Fulbright Scholarship! Alex
will spend the 2012-13 year in The
Netherlands furthering research he began
during the summer of 2011 as a Vredenburg
Scholarship recipient. The project involves
using software developed to inspect MRI
images. He will be studying the variability
of brain tumor segmentations conducted by
neurosurgeons with the goal to standardize
the quality of MRI images in the practice
of medicine.
The Vredenburg Scholarship allows outstanding engineering students at Johns Hopkins the opportunity to apply their engineering, technology, and applied science skills and training in an international setting. The Scholarship encourages students to broaden their engineering experience by giving them the chance to participate in international experiential activities through collaboration, investigation, and application.
Current engineering SOPHOMORES and JUNIORS may apply to become Vredenburg Scholars by proposing an international experience in the form of:
(The Vredenburg Scholarship does not cover traditional “study abroad” experiences.)
Projects will be funded to a maximum of $8,000; the typical range of a Vredenburg Scholarship is between $5,500 and $6,500 depending on the location. The Scholarship covers airfare, housing, food and other reasonable expenses associated with the international experience. Financial need will not be a factor in selection of the scholars and funding of the proposals. However, students with demonstrated financial need may be eligible for an additional stipend.
Applications for the Vredenburg Scholarship are available in Shaffer 103 and at the link below. Proposed projects must have an appropriate academic component. Applicants must submit a justification for the requested funding, detailing their projected expenses for the summer.
Applicants are encouraged to make alternate summer plans in the event that they are not awarded a Vredenburg Scholarship.
The Office of Academic Affairs has contact information for past participants who are willing to share their advice and experiences. Email wseadvising@jhu.edu for more info, or stop by Shaffer 103.
