The Johns Hopkins University
Whiting School of Engineering
Department of Civil Engineering
FACULTY POSITION: CIVIL ENGINEERING
The Department of Civil Engineering in the Whiting School of Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University invites applications for a full-time Lecturer position with an emphasis in the geotechnical engineering / geomechanics specialty area. Full-time lecturer positions at Johns Hopkins consist of six courses per year, or the equivalent; however, this position is expected to entail 2 undergraduate courses and one graduate course in the geo domain, with the remainder of the position open to some flexibility. Candidates interested in part-time positions may wish to limit responsibilities to this smaller number of courses. Candidates interested in full-time positions might wish to fulfill the remainder of the position's responsibilities by teaching courses outside of the geo domain and/or by engaging in fully externally funded research that would support the remainder of their salary.
The successful candidate will be expected to help articulate the role of geotechnical engineering / geomechanics in undergraduate and graduate education. In addition, the successful candidate will oversee the geomechanics laboratory, currently used in the undergraduate courses soil mechanics and foundations, and for graduate research. The successful candidate will join a faculty whose research broadly covers the areas of systems, structures, mechanics of materials, and fluids. Recent research projects range from post--earthquake disaster mitigation, to improved seismic design of mid-rise buildings, to the elucidation and modeling of the mechanism of fracture in polycrystalline metals, to efforts to optimally design new multi-functional materials. Additional course offerings or research efforts that are complementary to these areas are considered highly desirable. See the department website for more information.
All applications should be submitted electronically (review of applications begins 1 January 2012) as a single PDF document to: ce-lecturer-search@jhu.edu. Applicants should send their curriculum vitae, including a teaching statement, and a list of at least three references. Address all correspondence to Ben Schafer, Chair, CE Lecturer Search Committee, Department of Civil Engineering, The Johns Hopkins University, 3400 N. Charles St., Baltimore, MD, 21218. Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply. The Johns Hopkins University is an EEO/AA employer.
