Johns Hopkins University Department of Civil Engineering

Graduate Admissions FAQ

What graduate programs are offered in Civil Engineering at Johns Hopkins?
The CE Department at Hopkins offers graduate programs in structural, geotechnical, and coastal engineering, mechanics of materials, and hazards management.  Fundamental to these areas is research in solid, structural, fluid, and stochastic mechanics.  We offer a course-only masters program and research-oriented masters and doctoral programs.  A limited number of opportunities for financial support are available on a competitive basis.

Should I email faculty to determine if they have openings?
The Civil Engineering Department is always looking for bright, highly motivated students.  If you find a faculty member’s research particularly interesting it is best to indicate this on your application and in your personal statement.  Direct emails to faculty and staff attempting to identify ‘openings’ is discouraged – faculty receive several such emails from international students every day and it is not possible for us to read them all.

I am potentially interested in a PhD but would like to pursue my Masters Degree first.  Which program should I apply to?  Is it possible to continue on towards a PhD after completion of the Masters Degree?
Applicants should clearly indicate in their personal statement whether they are applying for the PhD or MSE program.  MSE applicants who might be interested in pursuing a PhD degree should certainly indicate this interest in their personal statement.  Students admitted as MSE candidates must apply again to be considered for the PhD program.

I am a US Citizen or Permanent Resident and am interested in JHU’s Modeling Complex Systems IGERT (http://www.igert.jhu.edu/mcs/) program.  How should I indicate my interest in this program on my Civil Engineering application?
Applicants should indicate this interest in their personal statement and send email to the program coordinator.  See the following link for details: http://www.igert.jhu.edu/mcs/applicationprocess.html

I have a Bachelors Degree, but not in Civil Engineering.  Can I still apply to the graduate program in Civil Engineering?
Yes.  Students with engineering degrees in other fields and liberal arts students strong in mathematics and sciences are welcome to apply.  Details on what may be required to get you up to speed are best discussed on a case-by-case basis.

What is the deadline for applications?
Civil Engineering’s deadline is January 16, 2011.

What is required for application?
The application requirements are given at the following link:  http://www.ce.jhu.edu/prospect-graduate-admissions/

When are decisions made?
Review of applications by the CE Admissions Committee begins after the application deadline (January 16, 2011) has passed.  Decisions are not likely to be made until March.  You will be notified if you have been accepted, rejected, or waitlisted.

Are there any teaching or research assistantships/fellowships available in Civil Engineering? What are the chances I will receive one?
Teaching and research assistantships and fellowships are allocated based on available funding, department needs, and student merit.  Admissions and funding decisions are made in early Spring, after the application period has closed.  Funds are awarded on a competitive basis so we do not allocate them or know your chances until we have received all applications.

What is the statistical likelihood that I would be accepted into the program?
We do not keep formal statistics on acceptance rates.

What is the Bachelors/Masters Program?
The Bachelors/Masters Program is a concurrent program and thus meant for undergraduates currently enrolled at JHU.  If you already have a Bachelors degree, you should likely apply to our graduate program.  We offer a full-time Masters of Science in Engineering (MSE) Program as well as the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Program.

What is the application fee?
The application fee for Civil Engineering is $25.

I am applying to 2 different departments.  Do I have to pay the application fee for both?
Yes.

What is the minimum score required on the GRE?
GRE scores are one of a number of factors taken into consideration when reviewing applications.  These include (but not limited to) personal statement, transcripts, standardized test scores, and letters of recommendation.  Although there is no minimum requirement, we recommend a minimum combined score of 1,200.

What are the minimum scores required on the TOEFL test?
TOEFL scores are one of a number of factors taken into consideration when reviewing applications. These include (but not limited to) personal statement, transcripts, standardized test scores, and letters of recommendation.  Although there is no minimum requirement, the Whiting School of Engineering recommends a minimum of 100 for the IBT, 250 for the CBT, and 600 for the PBT.

I am an international applicant, but am currently getting my Bachelors or Masters at a university in the United States.  Do I need to submit TOEFL scores?
You can request an exemption from the TOEFL, but prior to the exemption being approved, the Graduate Admissions Committee will want to review your letters of recommendation and transcripts.  If you would like to be exempted, please email Lisa Wetzelberger at lawetzel@jhu.edu to request.
