Requirements for the B.S. Degree

For students entering JHU in Fall 2011 or later: Requirements for the B.S. degree include 18 credits in humanities and social sciences, 17 credits in basic sciences, 16 credits in mathematics, 24 credits in core civil engineering, 12 credits in professional practice, 25 credits in civil engineering technical areas, 9 credits in technical electives, and 7 credits in unspecified electives. For students entering JHU between Fall 2008 and Spring 2011: Requirements for the B.S. degree include 24 credits in humanities and social sciences, 17 credits in basic sciences, 16 credits in mathematics, 55 credits in common engineering, 9 credits in technical electives, and 7 credits in unspecified electives. This totals 128 credits. At least 6 credits must be in writing courses (W) taken from the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

For students entering JHU between Fall 2006 and Spring 2008: Requirements for the B.S. degree include 24 credits in humanities and social sciences, 17 credits in basic sciences, 16 credits in mathematics, 48 credits in common engineering, 16 credits in technical electives, and 7 credits in unspecified electives. This totals 128 credits. At least 6 credits must be in writing courses (W) taken from the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

For students enrolled prior to Fall 2006: Requirements for the B.S. degree include 24 credits in humanities and social sciences, 17 credits in basic sciences, 16 credits in mathematics, 45 credits in common engineering, 20 credits in technical electives, and 6 credits in unspecified electives. This totals 128 credits, of which at least 6 must be in writing courses (W) courses.

Graduating with Honors

The Whiting School of Engineering and the Department of Civil Engineering recognize students with exemplary academic records.

For graduating students, these awards are:
    General Honors:

  • awarded to students with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

    Department Honors:

  • awarded to students with cumulative grade-point averages of 3.5 for 7 semesters, or
  • to students with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 for seven semesters and 3.75 for the last three semesters.

For continuing undergraduates:

     Dean's List:

  • For students who have earned a 3.50 semester average with a program of 14 or more credits (12 with grades).
