Johns Hopkins University Center for Bioengineering and Innovation Design

Academics

Welcome from the Undergraduate Director

Thank you for your interest in Johns Hopkins University's CBID Design Team. Over the past twelve years, more than 1,000 alumni of this program have developed health care technology designed to improve the quality of life of patients worldwide. I would like to share with you my enthusiasm for the program and the distinctive features that make it unique.

Students selected as Team Leaders are empowered to lead 5-10 fellow students, including freshmen, to solve a clinical problem posed by a clinician, a corporate or a NGO sponsor, such as Jhpiego. Resources available to help students solve their problem include faculty and staff from the CBID, the Department of Biomedical Engineering department, the Whiting School of Engineering, the School of Medicine, the School of Public Health and JHPIEGO, in addition to industry experts.

Since 2001, Design Team students have won dozens of technical national awards including the prestigious BMEIdea award, the BMEStart award, multiple awards from the Collegiate Inventor's Competition, and business plan awards such as MIT's 100K elevator pitch competition. Including individual course and team grants, the Design Team program has won over $400,000. Additionally, over 95% of the Design Team students are accepted into medical, dental and veterinary schools.

Thank you for letting me share with you my excitement about CBID's Design Team program highlights. We would like to discuss how you can bring your energy and talents to the next year's teams. Please contact our office to begin the admission process.

Sincerely,

Robert H. Allen, PhD, PE
