Improved Chest Surgery Rib Closure

A BME student design team invented a new way to close the chest after heart surgery. Using biocompatible polymer cable ties threaded through the ribs instead of the steel wires that are used to pierce the breast bone in most operations today, this new method reduces potential injuries to both the patients and the surgeons.

The project's sponsor has already obtained a provisional patent for the device and is evaluating the potential or commercialization of the technology.
